Macalester Moment Boston Big Question: Have algorithms made the world better or worse?

Algorithms shape our lives. They affect how we communicate, whom we date, and how we learn about the world. While algorithms rarely contain explicitly biased instructions, the context surrounding an algorithm can lead it to exacerbate the structural bias and inequality present in the world.

Join associate professor of mathematics, statistics, and computer science Shilad Sen, assistant professor of human-computer interaction and spatial computing at Northwestern University Dr. Brent Hecht ’05, and President Brian Rosenberg for an old-fashioned conversation about the computational building blocks of our digital lives.
