Chopin Society Presents Pianist Shai Wosner

3:00 PM  - 4:45 PM
Sunday Nov 11, 2018
Mairs Concert Hall, Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, Music Building

In addition to piano performance, Shai Wosner studied composition, music theory, and improvisation in his native Israel before moving to New York at age 21 to study at Juilliard with Emanuel Ax. He is greatly admired for the intellectual curiosity, emotional depth, and musical refinement he brings to a wide range of repertoire, from early Classical to contemporary. At the same time, he has become known as a Schubert specialist, or, in the words of Gramophone, a "Schubertian of unfaltering authority and character." In 2017-18 Shai launched a series of recitals with Schubert's last six "great sonatas," one of which (G Major) is on his St. Paul program. Career distinctions include Lincoln Center's Martin E. Segal Award, an Avery Fisher Career Grant, Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, and participation in the BBC Radio 3's two-year New Generation Artist program. He has worked with a long list of orchestras in the U.S. and Europe and is regularly invited to many of the world's most elite music festivals. Also in demand as a chamber musician, he has partnered with such notables as Pinchas Zukerman, Christian Tetzlaff, Lynn Harrell, Cho-Liang Lin, Martin Froest, and cellist Jennifer Koh, with whom he appeared on the Schubert Club International Series last season. His most recent solo recording for Onyx Classics, titled Impromptu, presents "improvisationally inspired" works by seven diverse composers. Shai lives in New York and is on the faculty of the Longy School in Boston.

"Pianist Wosner is an artist who, like all the finest, embodies equal parts head and heart."
