11:45 AM  - 1:00 PM
Thursday Apr 12, 2018
Art Com 202, Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center & Gallery

All are invited to hear Tim Harte, Associate Professor and Chair of Russian, Bryn Mawr College, talk on Thursday, April 12 from 11:45 am - 1 pm in Art Com 202 as part of the 26th Annual Russian, East European, and Central Asian Conference.  Lunch served.

This talk will explore how Russian and Soviet artists responded to the widely popular modern sports movement and elevated it as a prominent motif in their work.  The vitality, beauty, and revolutionary potential of athletics generated an innovative, idealistic aesthetic that Russian writers, painters, filmmakers, and photographers eagerly fostered.

Harte is the author of Fast Forward: The Aesthetics and Ideology of Speed in Russian Avant-Garde Culture, 1910-1930, as well as the forthcoming The Art of Athletics in Early 20th-Century Russian and Soviet Culture.
