Chopin Society presents Pianist Juho Pohjonen

3:00 PM  - 5:00 PM
Sunday Jan 21, 2018
Mairs Concert Hall, Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, Music Building

Making his Minnesota debut is Juho Pohjonen, one of today's most interesting pianists from Finland. Juho wins acclaim for his interpretations of a broad range of repertoire, from Bach and Mozart to Messaien and Salonen. Born in 1981, he took up piano at age 4 and as an 8-year old entered the Junior Academy of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He completed his Master's Degree in 2008 at the Sibelius Academy under Meri Louhos and Hui-Ying Liu. In 2004 he won First Prize at the Nordic Piano Competition in Nyborg, Denmark and in 2009 was chosen by Sir Andras Schiff as winner of the Klavier Festival Ruhr Scholarship in Germany. That year also brought his debut CD on the Dacapo label with the premiere recordings of works by Danish composer Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen. Juho's sensational opening recital at Music@Menlo's 2010 Festival explored the theme-and-variations form and was recorded for the Music@Menlo Live 2010 series 'Maps and Legends.' Juho regularly plays at international music festivals and with a host of orchestras and chamber music groups, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Highlights of last season included debuts with the Cleveland Orchestra and Vancouver Symphony, among others, plus returns to the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Chamber music highlights included the Library of Congress in Washington with violist Brett Dean, London's Wigmore Hall with cellist Jakob Koranyi, and the Suvisoitto Festival in Finland with Osmo Vanska and Erin Keefe. Along with violinist Petteri Iivonen and cellist Samuli Peltonen, Juho co-founded the Sibelius Piano Trio, which released their first double-CD for Yarlung Records in November of 2016.

"His playing is simply extraordinary. This was a night when a good view of the soloist's hands was worth extra money. It was a performance worth recording of a work worth hearing."
